Announcing Defy TV from North Face

Score industry recognition, the latest gear, and win a trip to the 2008 Powder video awards by posting videos of your best moves at Defy.TV, a new online video channel from The North Face.

The North Face has partnered with GoPro, a designer and manufacturer of wearable digital cameras, for The North Face Video Contest at www.defy.tv. Now through the end of January, The North Face is giving away GoPro’s Digital HERO 3 camera (Circuit City: $140) to customers who purchase a minimum of $399 of snowsports product at The North Face retail stores. Use the camera to capture your footage then post it online at Defy.tv.

If your video stands out among the pros, The North Face will hook you up with a head to toe product package and a trip to the Powder video awards to receive your prize in front of industry bigwigs. Visit www.defy.tv for all details on prizes and contest rules.

I’ve always wanted to capture myself on the slopes and this sounds like a great chance to win some cool prizes.

Colorado Gear Companies

I’m always amazed at how many companies behind the products I love are Colorado-based businesses. I like to support local products when possible, and I never have to worry about compromising quality to do so. In that vein, I thought I’d try to compile a list of Colorado companies that are making products that could help make your winter of snow sports better.  And maybe less smelly.

  • SmartWool - Save for my family, friends and bikes, there are not many things I love more than my SmartWool. Their ski socks and baselayers rock, plus I’m not smelly apres ski. (In the interest of completeness, I’m not actually sure that SmartWool is based in Colorado, but the company contact is a Steamboat Springs address).
  • Osprey - Have a yurt trip planned or are heading to the backcountry to ski? Then you might need a pack (or a new pack). Osprey makes some great women-specific ones as well.
  • Kelty - Boulder-based maker of tents, backpacks, etc. Kelty has winter campers and backcountry skiiers covered.
  • Venture Snowboards - Makes really cool boards in Silverton, CO. The official snowboard of Silverton Mountain, which, by the way, has the coolest resort logo ever.
  • GoLite - GoLite gear can keep you warm or sheltered on the mountain.

So, what did I miss? I’m an equal opportunity gear buyer and pimper.

Quick guide to buying goggles

I’m in the market for a new pair of snow goggles and I needed to re-familiarize myself with the many options out there. Here’s a quick summary of what I’ve learned:

  • Double-paned lenses fog less
  • Yellow, gold and amber lenses filter out blue light, emphasizing shadows in the snow
  • Green and silver enhance contrast making them suitable for most brighter conditions
  • Purple and rose lenses are best used for low-light conditions
  • Polarization is a must-have for sunny days
  • Reflective lenses are also great for sunny days as they reduce the glare

As this season is shaping up to be a warmer one I anticipate more sunny than cloudy days. With that said I’ll be looking for double-paned silver goggles with polarization.
