So, the weekend has come and gone and the bright suits of gaypers (those that dress like the flamboyant out-of-towners) will slowly fade from memory. That’s right, the 2007/2008 season has largely come to an end.
But wait, you say, there are still a few resorts open, right? Of course! Here are the last few spots serving up the spring slush:
So, go have fun and check back here for updates on the spring festivities.

Vail Resorts and Intrawest would be crazy to close everything next weekend. Steamboat and many others already closed this weekend. But, beyond the slush at the bottom: there’s plenty of snow! We were at Keystone this weekend and I was still finding fluffy powder in the trees. Vail has tons of powder still, too. Please, please don’t close quite yet!

Q: Is there any chance that the usual Summit County mtn’s will stay open through the end of April, besides A-Basin and Loveland? My kids have Easter break from 4/21-25. What about Breck? Vail? B-Creek?

Q: Hey Colorado Snow, stoked to see you on Askablogr! After a big snow winter here in the Northwest it looks like we’ll see an early spring. Any predictions for where to find the best spring snow in CO?
A: Haha, the best spring snow in Colorado is going to be in Utah.
But seriously, the easy answer is Wolf Creek. They've already got 464 inches this year (that's roughly 39 feet) and I don't see why it would stop.
If you can't make the trip that far, I'd say Arapahoe Basin and Loveland are always great for spring skiing. Both mountains (on the divide) hold their snow into May and June (some years even July) as they're so high up. It's not uncommon to see people hanging out in the A-Basin parking lot ("the beach") having a great time.
So, if you're looking for a great spring ambiance with snow through the spring, I'd say visit Arapahoe Basin.

Yesterday I was at Vail and it was surprisingly crowded (for a Tuesday). Lots of fresh snow everywhere and perfect blue skies all day. New snow has started falling today (Wednesday) and the mountains are under a winter storm warning. Again, travel is not easy so be prepared and take caution.

The winter storm that wrecked havoc in California seems to have moved its way to Colorado. Aspen and Vail are expected to have 10 inches of new snow by Tuesday morning while Silverton and Wolf Creek are reporting snowfall amounts as high as 42 inches over the weekend. While this may seem like good news, road conditions may make it difficult to get in on the action as portions of I-70 and several passes have been periodically shut down due to dangerous driving conditions. See the Denver Post article here.

Thanks to I-70 closing on Sunday and Monday “Loveland Ski Area, a favorite of Front Range skiers, shuttered all of its slopes for the first time in four years, while other resorts struggled with accommodating stranded tourists.” Read more at the Rocky Mountain News.

Whiteout conditions stranded over 2,000 people in Silverthorne as officials closed I-70 from Vail to Georgetown (eastbound) on Sunday night. Hotels were full, restaurants were packed and many people never made it home. Shelters were set up on Sunday and Steamboat Springs reported over 17 inches. Visit CBS4Denver.com for more.

A snowstorm hit Colorado this week beginning with a white Christmas on Tuesday. Plenty of snow piled up in town and in the mountains and even canceled hundreds of flights at Denver International Airport. But, the mountains are still getting a few inches a day and this weekend should prove to be excellent skiing. Keep in mind though, today’s high was eight-degrees in Summit County and tomorrow will be little more than double that. Click here for this weekend’s forecast and be sure to bundle up.

My best day skiing was last Sunday at Vail when they got over 8 inches of fresh new snow. Sure, Vail got snow but I got a bowl! The Blue Sky Basin also opened and I can’t count the number of times I got (delightfully) stuck in the deep white stuff.

The best part of all this snow is you can’t get too terribly hurt. The worst part is that a lot of rocks, cliffs and bumps are lurking beneath. It’s also a huge drain of energy trying to stand up and work your way out of getting stuck. So, with the good (great!) comes the bad. You be the judge:

It’s true! Our reader, Gabe, said this weekend was it and he was right. Sure, Wolf Creek may not have snow-making capabilities but it’s weekends like this last one that makes it unnecessary.
Summit Base Depth : 47 inches
Last 24 Hours : 7 inches
Last 48 Hours : 19 inches
Last 72 Hours : 47 inches
Check out Wolf Creek’s snow report.

Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes I like to know what other parts of the country or world are getting snow so that I can be appropriately jealous (or happily smug about Colorado totals).
Recently I found the Powder Points snow report, which makes this easy by listing all snow totals in one aggregated list. How else would I know that Bjorli, Norway has been pounded with 2 feet of snow in the last 72 hours? It’s also great to see Colorado resorts filling out quite a few of the top slots because of the latest snow.
Now to plan a trip to Norway…

This morning I woke up to an inch of snow outside my house in Broomfield, CO. But, to everyone’s surprise, it screwed the morning commute harder than it should have. This is typical, though. The first few snow and travelers forget how to drive. Plus, this morning was nearly 10 degrees warmer than yesterday (cloud cover retains the heat).
Snow in the mountains
But, who cares about the sloppy commute?
Wednesday morning, Breckenridge reported 9 inches of new snow,
Beaver Creek 6, Snowmass 5, Vail 4, Winter Park 3.5, Keystone 3, Aspen 3, Copper Mountain 3, Loveland 2, Arapahoe Basin 2, Crested Butte 1 and half an inch at Eldora.
Colorado Ski Country said Telluride would open Wednesday with Steamboat, Sunlight and Echo Mountain planning to start running lifts Friday. (CBS4)

Finally, a winter storm has hit the state albeit short-lived. Tomorrow (Thanksgiving) seems to offer only clouds and cold weather. The following new snow is being reported around the resorts in the last 24 hours.

Those hoping for powder over Thanksgiving might have a harder time than previously anticipated. A handful of Colorado mountains recently announced postponed openings due to lack of snow. Citing marginal temperatures for snow making, Steamboat Springs, Vail, and Eldora have all pushed back their season openings. Seven resorts are currently open, though most are only offering limited runs. Despite the delays, Vail remains optimistic that recent temperature drops and a possible storm will allow the resort “to open with a very good snow surface.”
Steamboat won’t be opening until the last day of November, missing the Thanksgiving crowd altogether. Vail opens on Wednesday the 21st and Eldora opens on Thanksgiving.

Of course I happen to be in sunny California when the flakes fall but it sounds like some snow has hit the mountains along with the front range early Wednesday.
CBS4 reports only about an inch in the mountains making for a slight inconvenience rather than a powdery weekend.

Recent predictions from the Wester Water Assessment (WWA) say that we might get higher temperatures and lower snowfalls this season:
Expected La NiƱa impacts during October-December 2007 season are above average precipitation in the Pacific Northwest (including western Wyoming) and below average precipitation in the Southwest, including parts of Colorado. There is an increased chance of above average temperatures over all of the Intermountain West (Intermountain West Climate Summary).
Not cool… literally.
